Apps for Water

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Today Acacia Tree is proud to announce our support for Apps for Water. All of our proceeds for today, December 20th, will go to charity: water, an organization devoted to bringing safe drinking water to people all over the world.

If you’d like to support this project, you can buy SousChef today — or buy any of the other apps on the Apps for Water website. But you can also give directly to charity: water. As their website says: “100% of public donations directly fund water projects.” That’s the most percent you can have.

If you already own SousChef, or if it’s no longer December 20th, you can give directly to charity: water. We think it’s a great organization, and independent charity ratings groups like them, too. CharityWatch considers charity: water one if its Top-Rated Charities, giving them a grade of A; Charity Navigator gives charity: water four stars. If you want to help people in the developing world, giving money to charity: water is a good investment.

Happy holidays from Acacia Tree Software. You can check out all the apps supporting this event at Apps for Water. You can find SousChef on the Mac App Store or the iTunes App Store.

Introducing SousChef Noël — plus SousChef 2.1 for iOS

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

To celebrate the time of year when families and friends get together and share delicious food, we’ve put out a special version of SousChef. We call it SousChef Noël. We took over fifty of our favorite recipes from the SousChef cloud and made them into a free version of SousChef for iPhones and iPads. You can find it on the App Store.

We’ve included traditional and newfangled recipes for cookies, desserts, main courses, and Christmas-morning breakfast. I’m looking forward to roasting my first goose this year. For sweets, the homemade candy canes and the peppermint almond bark look delicious.

We’ve also updated SousChef for iOS to version 2.1. The latest version adds grocery lists to iPad, includes native Twitter support for iOS 5, and has a bunch of little improvements and bug fixes. Just be careful while you’re carrying your iPad through the grocery store.

What’s up next? We’re working on an update to SousChef for Mac, and we hope to be able to share more about that soon.

Happy holidays from Acacia Tree!

Introducing SousChef to the Mac App Store

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

We’re happy to announce that SousChef is now available on the Mac App Store! Even better: the price is just $19.99.

We’d like to say hello and welcome to our new Mac App Store customers. You’ve helped make SousChef a “New and Noteworthy” app — we’re currently #4 in the top paid Lifestyle apps!

As for customers who purchased SousChef through our website: don’t worry, you won’t miss out on any updates, and you don’t have to re-purchase SousChef. For future customers, however, we think buying SousChef through the Mac App Store will make it easier for you to keep track of the apps you own and keep those apps up to date.

We’re going to keep cooking up delicious features for you to try, and refining SousChef to make it the best recipe manager in the galaxy.

Ten more days of sale!

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Friends, Chefs, and SousChefs,

We’re extending the sale on the iOS version of SousChef until November 1st. Until then, you can cook from your iPad or iPhone for just five American dollars.

Why are we extending the sale? Because we are afraid of ghosts.

So get SousChef while it’s hot, and cook up some spooky Halloween treats.

Two New SousChefs!

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

We’re happy to announce two new versions of SousChef, hot off the griddle — one for Mac, and one for your iOS devices.

SousChef for iOS is now a universal app, available now for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. To celebrate the new release, we’re putting SousChef for iOS on sale for $4.99 for a limited time only.

The new update to SousChef for Mac goes well with the iOS version — you can now share your recipes with your iOS devices using Dropbox. Just turn on Sharing in Preferences. And if you’re headed to the grocery store, you can send your grocery list to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

We’re really happy with the new versions of SousChef. Try them out and let us know how they help you cook!

SousChef for iPad 1.1

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Recently we released SousChef for iPad 1.1. It supports printing in iOS 4.2, multitasking with iOS 4 and has numerous small improvements and bug fixes. You can get it here.

The update also adds syncing architecture that will be enabled with a future update of the Mac version.

Shortlinks for Recipes

Monday, April 26th, 2010

A new addition to SousChef for iPad that will be rolled out to our Mac version soon is the generation of recipe shortlinks. These little URL’s are perfect for Tweeting, Blogs, Posting to Facebook and just sharing recipes in general. Each link points to a static recipe page which is accessible to anyone once you give them the URL. Of course, recipes that have been opt-ed out of the cloud are not available in this manner. These pages are hosted by us and are free for anyone to use. To access these links in the iPad app, just tap the gear icon on a recipe, tap share and then tap the way you’d like to share the link. Enjoy!

Available for iPad

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Acacia Tree Software is proud to announce the release of our a brand new version of SousChef for iPad!

It allows iPad users to search the 160,000+ recipes in SousChef’s online recipe cloud, and then cook using the iPad instead of a recipe book in the kitchen.

We’ll be posting a quick overview of the process of writing this app along with some bits and pieces that we created to make it happen along the way in the near future. IPhone users don’t worry we’re still working on the iPhone version as well!

Check out SousChefApp.com for screenshots.

A few thoughts on iPad.

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Wow.  So just when you thought you were getting a handle on adapting your software to every platform Apple had to offer…  They go and annouce the iPad.

Now, opinions out in the web vary on this new Apple brainchild.  However, we at Acacia Tree Software, love it!  Why?  It’s perfect for your kitchen!  You can buy a dock for it and put it right on the counter, or if you have limited counter space (like me) you can get a mount and put it on the wall.  There are even new outlets that include built-in USB ports (check them out here) so you don’t have to worry about it running out of battery life if you have mounds of dishes or alot of prep work.  And with a glass screen, its easy to clean.  Plus, it’s a full on media station right there.  You can listen to music or watch downloaded video or movies while you cook or surf the web while you eat a sandwich. The only thing it needs? That’s right, recipes.

Pre-orders started today. We ordered ours this morning.

As you can no doubt tell, we’re pretty excited about the possibilities of moving SousChef to this new platform.  We think it’s a perfect fit.  That’s not to say we’re stopping development on SousChef for iPhone though–it’s still a main priority.  But the iPad has really got us thinking and planning.  Hopefully, you’ll see the entire SousChef family of integrated apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPad out to you all in the near future.

So keep those feature requests coming.  We really do read them.

User Submission: AppleScript

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

One of our users, Christopher Hickman, inquired a few of weeks ago about SousChef’s compatibility with AppleScript. After some work, Christopher is sharing two neat scripts with the rest of us. The scripts were created to open SousChef and have it perform a specific function; either selecting a specific recipe, or searching for one in the cloud. His goal was to make it possible to add dinner plans to his iCal calendar and have them contain links to specific recipes in SousChef. Clicking these links opens SousChef and displays the recipe. Ingenious!

And while we’re on the subject of scripts. Here is a link to our friends at Red Sweater Software’s Fast Scripts. Fast Scripts allows you to set key commands for specific scripts. Set a key command to Christopher’s copy recipe link script and it makes the task of copying recipes into iCal even simpler.
